For a while now CD Projekt Reds Cyberpunk 2077 has got a lot of backlash for releasing a buggy and inperformant game. And at least for the console Versions this is more of a problem, than on the PC, where have lesser problems but its still not in a state where you would say thats perfectly fine.
But CD Projekt Red already announced in an apology letter, that a patch is on the way for December and two more for January and February to follow:
It sure is not an pleasant start for none of us in Cyberpunk 2077 and we can discuss a lot about they should have delayed the game more or if they should have shown enough real gameplay on each version of the game. But thats not a topic for today.
Handling the current situation
I want to leave some positive words for this game and its developer, because CD Projekt Red has shown us again that they still care for gamers and still carry the spirit to create games that will fascinate gamers.
Lets start with the handling of the problems. While a lot of developer or publisher are downplaying problems or are even ignoring them, CD Projekt Red has not only apologed and announced a first patch roadmap, they also said that everyone can refund the game if they are not happy with the current state. And if you have issues with getting a refund they also offered help. Thats far more communication and help, than we often get from other developers and publishers. Alone for this behavior I want to say thank you!
Thinking about CD Projekt Red
I want you to take a moment and think about CD Projekt Red and the games they developed so far. Done?
What have you thought about? Maybe that they made the Witcher games or that they are favored in the gaming industry by us gamers? But for what reasons do we favor them? And again think a moment about it!
For me its more than that they create good games. When I think about it there are three major points that pop up in my mind.
- Support – not only do they patch and maintain their games, they also do it years after they released the game.
Also with the Witcher 3 they started with a buggy game, well not so bad as in Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles but still buggy. In the end they fixed the problems, not only the bugs, but also the performance issues. For Cyberpunk 2077 they have to show us that they are willing to do so, too!
- DLC – smaller DLC were free and the two major DLC were as big or bigger than other games and they were charged at an reasonable price, while other developers charge you 20 Dollar for a set of armor or ingame currency.
CD Projekt Red already announced that they want to release as many DLCs as in the Witcher 3. Some are free and some are to pay.
- Effort – they create games, which are rich in details and content. Also they set a standard to their games that is above a lot of its competitors.
The point Effort is a topic I want to discuss a bit more than a few words. Let us take a look at Cyberpunk 2077, what is the obvious diffrence between it and The Witcher 3? The setting!
For a developer that mostly focused on fantasy medieval games they now developed a game that takes place in a futuristic city. They had to develop a lot from nothing, if not everything and made a big risk in developing in a new genre, where they have no experience in for 7-8 years. How many other developer did this or would take the risk? I really appreciate the risk they took, the effort they put in and the outcome of the world they created.
I appreciate how the city is beautiful with all its lights and reflections, the design of the buildings, the variety of its pedestrians, the advertisments ingame, the tv shows, the superb atmosphere and the use of raytracing. There aren’t many games tht show us what raytracing can do, and here goes CD Projekt Red and decides that they put it in the game, while the game was started to developed when raytracing wasn’t even a thing. And the outcome really looks gorgeous!
And there is still more! In the last years it got common that a lot of games only offered one voiceover language. In most cases its english. In Cyberpunk 2077 we got 10 different voiceover languages and they are also all lipsynced.
I could go on and on what I like about this game, but I didn’t want to write an essay why Cyberpunk 2077 is great.
Some final words
I just wanted to say thank you CD Projekt Red for your efforts, your hard work and the risk you took to create a new game. While the problems really are sad and bad for the moment, you still showed us a new world authentically and rich in its envirement and how it has to be done. Other developer have again to be messured at you and your game.
Thank you for being an enrichment for the gaming industry!
